Esther Williams (August 8, 1922 - ) is a United States competitive swimmer and 1940s and 1950s movie star. Known as "America's Mermaid," she was famous for her musical films that featured elaborate performances with swimming, diving and "water ballet," which is now known as synchronized swimming.

Annette Kellerman- The Original Mermaid
Annette, was an Australian professional swimmer, vaudeville and film star, writer, and advocate for the change of women's swimwear. She is often credited for inventing the sport of synchronised swimming after her 1907 performance of the first water ballet in a glass tank at the New York Hippodrome. She was portrayed by Esther Williams in the film Million Dollar Mermaid (1952). Williams has often said this was her favorite film, and named her autobiography after it. Kellerman, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
