JUPITER'S DARLING (1955)

Jupiter's Darling(1955). Musical /romance. Director: George Sidney. Cast: Esther Williams , Howard Keel and Marge Champion. The film features Roman generals Fabius Maximus and Scipio Africanus who appear briefly. Carthaginians Mago Barca and Maharbal also appear. Jupiter's Darling was based on Robert Sherwood's anti-war comedy film The Road to Rome (1927). The film was the last of three films Williams and Keel made together, the other two being Pagan Love Song (1950) and Texas Carnival (1951).

In ancient Rome, Horatio remembers back to the day when Fabius Maximus was first crowned dictator. Fabius vows to slay Hannibal of Carthage, who has taken over the country's northern provinces. Unfortunately, Fabius' fiancee Amytis is not there to hear his victory speech, she is out racing her chariot through the countryside. Eventually, Amytis goes to the temple with her slave Meta, but they are too late for the ceremony and decide to spend the day shopping . Fabius reaches the marketplace, with his mother Fabia, who criticizes Amytis for her behavior. Fabius demands that they will marry that evening, or Amytis must enter the temple of the Vestal Virgins. Their wedding is interrupted by the news that the enemy is now twenty miles from Rome. Curious Amytis and Meta sneak outside the walls of the city to get a look at Hannibal. They are captured and Hannibal orders the women to be executed as spies. Amytis asks for time alone with Hannibal to make a last request, then begs him to spare Rome. Hannibal refuses and sends for the guard, but is stopped short when Amytis points out that his map is not correct. Trying to buy time, Amytis offers to take him to a temple overlooking the city. As they look at the city by moonlight, Hannibal and Amytis begin to fall in love. Will Hannibal change his mind about destroying Rome. The music is gorgeous and the costumes are amazing. Both Keel and William's both give wonderful performances. I enjoyed Keel singing. Esther Williams water ballet sequence and her swimming skills are put to use during an escape scene. I also enjoyed Marge and Gower dance scene with the elephants.

TEXAS CARNIVAL (1951)

TEXAS CARNIVAL(1951). Musical/comedy/romance. Director: Charles Walters. Cast: Esther Williams, Red Skelton, Howard Keel and Anne Miller.

Cornie and his partner, Debbie, run the dunk tank in a Texas carnival. While Cornie is out trying to get a hamburger for Debbie, he sees drunken rancher Dan Sabinas flashing his money and saves him from getting taken at one of the carnival games. Cornie insists Dan take a cab to his hotel and promises to return his car. Dan orders the cab driver to take him to Mexico instead of the hotel. When Dan's expensive car is returned to the hotel, the staff mistakes them for Dan and his sister Marilla. Cornie goes to find Sabina's suite, looking for Dan, while everyone at the pool thinks Debbie is Marilla, the richest girl in Texas. As Debbie waits for Cornie by the pool, Slim Shelby, Dan's foreman, arrives and sees that everyone is treating Debbie as Marilla and decides to keep quite. When Cornie realizes that people think he is Dan, he decides to enjoy himself before Dan returns. Debbie, still waiting by the pool, is so hungry that she faints and is rescued by Slim. After Slim takes her to the suite, the doctor says that she needs to eat something, and the starving Debbie devours her meal without coming up for air.. How long can this team keep up with their stolen identity?

A couple of my favorite scene are: Esther Williams, only production number in a dream sequence in which she floats around in Howard Keel's darkened hotel room, trailing a white veil and the chuck wagon race, which involves some dangerously risky stunt work.

PAGAN LOVE SONG (1950)

Pagan Love Song (1950), A beautiful south seas musical, where everyone lives in the sun and looks out for each other. This is one of my favorites films from the Esther Williams DVD volume II collection. A tanned Esther Williams plays a Half-Tahitian Half- American woman.( Mimi Bennett), who lives with her rich aunt. Bored of the easy life of Tahiti and longs for the excitement of the United States. But when (Hazard Endicott) played by Howard Keel, arrives to take over his late uncle's coconut plantation, she has a change of heart. At first Hazard mistakes Mimi for one of natives, and instead of correcting Hazard, Mimi playfully pretends to know just a little bit of English. Later.. Mimi stops by to invite Hazard to a party at her house. Hazard accepts the invitation. Expecting the guests to be natives, Hazard comes dressed in a sarong. When he finds the guests are dressed in suits and evening dresses. He leaves the party , and Mimi, realizing that her joke has gone to far, catches up with him and tells him the truth. After a short time they become engaged. Everything is going well until one day when Mimi witnesses Hazard lose his temper with one of his workers Tavae. Mimi does not like Hazard's harsh treatment of Tavae and breaks off their engagement. Will Mimi ever forgive Hazard?

This is a gorgeous film. Scenery of the island of Tahiti was beautiful. A cute story line with some wonderful songs and one amazing coral sea ballet. I also enjoyed seeing the native dances. One that really stood out in my mind was the SIMONE knife dance. Rita Moreno plays a feature role, in sarong and long beautiful hair.

Esther Williams, was 6 months pregnant while filming PAGAN LOVE SONG.

Van Johnson and Cyd Charisse were the first choices for the leads, but Charisse was pregnant at the time. A new screenplay was then written for Esther Williams to star in.
