Esther Williams (August 8, 1922 - ) is a United States competitive swimmer and 1940s and 1950s movie star. Known as "America's Mermaid," she was famous for her musical films that featured elaborate performances with swimming, diving and "water ballet," which is now known as synchronized swimming.
Why does she often stand as if she's posing? I'm not sure that I've seen her stand in a relaxed manner.
I love it though; my sister and I would stand like her when we were bored, or splash all over the pool doing some of her routines while smiling(and trying not to drown), just to get attention.
Jenny has a nice little post on Jupiter's Darling (1955) that I've just found: http://cinemaocd.blogspot.com/2010/03/jupiters-darling-1955.html She loves that Esther Williams gets to fondle a bunch of guys in body paint underwater.
